Lagos in Portugal is one of the oldest towns on the Algarve and that is clearly visible. The center is compact and cozy, with nice squares, beautiful churches, an old city wall and a harbor.
After centuries of Moorish rule, it was recaptured by the Portuguese in the 13th century, after which it became an important trading port and base for the famous explorers such as Vasco da Gama and Columbus. The old city walls are still largely intact and if you climb them you have a beautiful view over the city and the sea.
The old town of Lagos with its small streets and squares are great to wander around. Make sure to walk into the side streets outside the tourist area! There you will find the most beautiful small churches and squares with colorful buildings with the famous colored Portuguese tiles, the azujelos. Of course there are also the nicest terraces here to enjoy the goodies of the Portuguese kitchen.
The Algarve is best known for its beautiful golden erosion-carved cliffs, paradisiacal sandy beaches and spectacular views, also in Lagos. The most famous beaches are Praia Dona Ana and Meia Praia. And especially Ponte da Piedade special because of its jagged erosion-carved rock formations that can only be visited by water.
